Design Engineer – Precision Machining

Overview

In this role you support a Nottingham-based engineering team to design precision workholding and fixturing solutions. You will translate customer needs into robust mechanical designs through 3D CAD and validated testing, guiding concepts from conception to delivery. You’ll collaborate with clients and colleagues to solve complex requirements, documenting processes and staying current with design practices. This position offers a hands-on, impact-driven opportunity to shape practical machining solutions while working within a close-knit project team.

Responsibilities

• Meet with clients to understand project brief and requirements
• Create and refine mechanical designs using 3D CAD (Siemens NX and/or SolidWorks)
• Design bespoke workholding and fixturing for customer applications
• Use simulations and testing to optimize designs
• Document design iterations, tests, and specifications
• Manage time, resources, and project deadlines
• Liaise with customers, designers, engineers and manufacturers
• Produce technical reports and operational documentation
• Keep up-to-date with engineering advances and best practices
• Support colleagues and contribute to the wider engineering team

Key requirements

• 5 years of engineering experience (preferably in workholding/fixturing)
• Strong practical knowledge of fixturing and workholding
• Proficiency in Siemens NX and/or SolidWorks
• Solid understanding of mechanical design principles
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent attention to detail and methodical design approach
• Good time-management and organisational skills
• Effective communication with customers, engineers, designers and manufacturers
