Forward Deployed Engineering Manager, Generative AI, Google Cloud

Overview

As the technical lead for GenAI FDE, you will guide engineering excellence by defining standards, architecture, and benchmarks. You’ll partner with Sales and Tech Leadership to align requirements with high-value opportunities and deploy expert resources to customers. You will lead a software engineering and AI-focused team, bridge frontier AI products with production deployments, and mentor engineers tackling data readiness and integration challenges. Responsibilities

• Set code standards, architectural best practices, and benchmarks to raise engineering quality
• Coordinate with Sales and Tech Leadership to translate customer opportunities into technical plans
• Lead technical hiring for FDE and evaluate AI/ML expertise and systems engineering capabilities
• Identify skill gaps in MCP, tool-calling, and foundation models to maintain SME in AI stack
• Collaborate with Product and Engineering to remove blockers and build internal tools for efficiency
• Mentor and empower a software engineering/FDE team delivering bespoke agentic solutions at customer sites

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
• 8 years experience as a sales engineer or technical consultant in cloud/comms customer-facing role
• 2 years experience managing a software engineering, FDE, or similar technical customer-facing team in a cloud environment
• Experience in Python or a similar language
• Experience developing AI/GenAI solutions using AI tools or designing multi-agent workflows or RAG systems
