We operate green waste composting sites across England with sites in Surrey, Northamptonshire, West London, Essex, Kent and Suffolk as well as our flagship site in Cambridgeshire where we also process food waste. In addition to composting Envar also recycle coffee grounds.
About the role
The Plant Manager is responsible for leading the engineering and maintenance function across the site, ensuring all plant, machinery and fixed assets are adequately maintained, safe to use and available when required. A step change in business direction is to focus on preventative maintenance which is driving the need for the role.
The Plant Manager will work closely with site managers and operational leaders to ensure engineering activities support business objectives, production targets and compliance requirements. The role will be a combination of both office and on the tools to which we expect to be a 35% / 65% split.
It requires someone with a get stuck in attitude who is not afraid to work in dirty, dusty environments and takes pride in their work.
Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership: Lead and develop the Plant/Engineering team across the facilityEstablish clear engineering standards, procedures and performance expectationsBuild a preventative maintenance culture focused on reliability and continuous improvementProvide coaching, mentoring and technical support to engineering personnelDrive continuous improvement initiatives to improve efficiency, reliability and productivityAsset Management: Ensure preventative maintenance programmes are planned, executed and continuously improvedMaintain an accurate asset register and lifecycle management programmeMonitor plant performance and implement corrective actions to improve reliabilityMaintenance Management & Contractors: Manage all planned, preventative and reactive maintenance activitiesMinimise equipment downtime through effective maintenance schedulingEnsure maintenance records are completed and maintained accuratelyAnalyse breakdown trends and drive root cause investigationsManage external service providers and engineering contractorsEnsure contractor compliance with company policies and site proceduresMonitor contractor performance against agreed standardsHealth, Safety and Compliance: Ensure all engineering activities comply with health and safety legislation and company proceduresSupport safe systems of work including permits, lockout/tagout procedures and contractor managementConduct engineering risk assessments and ensure corrective actions are completedSupport compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirementsCapital Projects and Continuous Improvement: Advise on engineering improvement and capital investment projectsOversee installation, commissioning and handover of new assetsDeliver projects on time and within budgetImplement engineering KPIs and performance reportingUtilise data to identify trends, risks and opportunitiesPromote innovation and best practice across all sitesAbout you:
Skills and Experience
Essential
Proven experience in engineering management within waste management, recycling, processing, manufacturing, aggregates, quarrying or heavy industryStrong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systemsCompetent at diagnosing problems with machines with the ability to carry out repairs such as, welding, bearing and motor changes, servicing, basic electricsExperience managing maintenance teams and contractorsExcellent communication and leadership abilitiesFull UK driving licence.
Desirable
Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering. Engineering management qualification. IOSH or NEBOSH qualification. Experience with CMMS maintenance management systems. Knowledge of mobile plant including loading shovels, excavators, telehandlers, shredders, screens, trommels and conveyors.
