Premises Manager - Secondary School - Reading Start Date: As soon as possible Contract: Full-time, Permanent Salary: Dependent on experience Premises Manager A well-established Secondary School in Reading is seeking an experienced, practical and proactive Premises Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day management of its buildings, grounds and facilities.
This is a hands-on role for someone who understands the importance of maintaining a safe, secure and well-presented school environment. You will work closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team, taking ownership of premises matters and ensuring maintenance issues are identified and dealt with efficiently.
You will oversee both planned and reactive maintenance across the site. This will include arranging repairs, coordinating contractors, checking completed works and maintaining records of servicing and inspections. A major part of the role will be ensuring that the school remains compliant with health and safety requirements.
You will undertake regular site inspections, identify hazards and defects and ensure appropriate action is taken. You will also oversee security arrangements, including opening and closing the school, access control, keys, alarms and contractor access.
During the school day, you will respond to maintenance requests from staff and ensure urgent issues are prioritised appropriately. The role will be varied and practical. You may be involved in preparing classrooms for examinations, setting up spaces for assemblies and events, arranging furniture, receiving deliveries or supporting larger refurbishment and improvement projects.

You will work alongside teaching, administration, pastoral and support staff and become an important part of the school's wider operational team. Premises Manager - Responsibilities Manage the day-to-day operation of the school premises Coordinate planned and reactive maintenance Carry out regular site inspections Identify and address health and safety issues Manage external contractors and maintenance providers Monitor servicing and inspection schedules Maintain premises and compliance records Support fire safety procedures Monitor alarms, access control and security systems Manage opening and closing procedures Oversee keys and site access Coordinate deliveries and contractor visits Prepare rooms for examinations and school events Assist with furniture and equipment moves Monitor the condition of buildings and grounds Support premises improvement projects Obtain quotations and assist with expenditure monitoring where required You will need to be comfortable making decisions and prioritising work according to urgency, safety and the needs of the school.
Premises Manager - Experience and Qualifications The successful candidate will ideally have: Previous Premises Manager, Site Manager or Facilities Management experience Experience managing a large or complex site School experience desirable Strong practical maintenance knowledge Experience managing external contractors Good understanding of health and safety requirements Excellent organisational skills Ability to manage multiple priorities Strong communication skills Ability to work independently Reliable and proactive approach Commitment to maintaining a safe environment Relevant facilities management, health and safety or trade qualifications would be advantageous.
The Premises Team The successful candidate will be expected to be visible and hands-on across the site. While you will have responsibility for coordinating contractors and maintenance, the school is looking for someone who is also willing to deal with practical issues directly when appropriate.
