Principal Engineer - Full Stack Java

Overview

As Principal Engineer, you will shape the technical vision for client-facing solutions within the Gloss product and International Processing Engine. You will lead the design and evolution of scalable, secure, and high-performing systems, working across architecture, product, and delivery stakeholders.

You’ll drive platform resilience, security, and cross-system integrations, while promoting modern DevOps practices and AI-assisted development tools. Your role combines hands-on engineering with strategic influence to deliver complex features and production improvements on time.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical vision and architecture for the IPE application and its integrations
• Lead design, development, and evolution of back-end services, front-end components, RESTful APIs, and enterprise integrations
• Provide principal-level technical leadership across multiple workstreams ensuring robust, secure, and scalable solutions
• Govern architectural decisions, data design, resilience, security, and technology risk management
• Deliver platform capabilities, production fixes, and cross-system changes aligned with client deadlines
• Establish and champion engineering standards across architecture, coding, testing, security, observability, and release readiness
• Provide technical oversight of designs, code, tests, and deployment approaches
• Act as senior authority for production incidents, driving root-cause analysis and improvements
• Promote containerisation, Kubernetes, CI/CD, deployment automation, and modern DevOps practices
• Mentor Technical Leads and engineers to strengthen technical capability and knowledge sharing
• Collaborate with stakeholders to shape roadmaps, manage dependencies, and resolve technical risks
• Support and enhance settlement-related workflows and securities trade lifecycle solutions
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering practices, platform reliability, and AI-assisted tooling

Key requirements

• 12+ years of professional software development experience with Core Java, Spring, and Spring Boot
• Experience as Principal Engineer, Solution Architect, Lead Architect, or senior technical leader
• Strong Java and Spring expertise; design and delivery of large-scale microservices-based back-end systems
• Strong SQL skills with experience with MS SQL Server and Sybase
• JavaScript experience for front-end and full-stack delivery; Python is a plus
• Hands-on Docker and Kubernetes expertise for containerised design, deployment, and operations
• Full-stack capability across front-end, back-end, API, data, and integration layers
• Extensive experience with RESTful APIs, distributed services, and enterprise integrations
• Experience designing high-volume, real-time systems with emphasis on performance and reliability
• Ability to define architectures with focus on scalability, security, maintainability, and observability
• Experience establishing engineering standards, code reviews, and improving delivery practices
• Strong automated testing, quality engineering, CI/CD, and deployment automation
• Experience with Git, Eclipse, IntelliJ, Visual Studio, JIRA, and Confluence
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder-management skills
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, or related field
