Senior Database Engineer

Overview

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will own and operate a scalable, secure internal database platform used by hundreds of engineers. You’ll drive automation, tooling, and best practices that enable rapid, reliable product development at scale. Your work shapes how Wise runs databases globally, balancing security, reliability, and developer productivity. You’ll collaborate across Platform and Data teams, contribute to roadmaps, and mentor others. This role offers impact across our global infrastructure and a chance to influence platform direction in a fast-growing fintech.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and evolve the internal cloud-based database platform
• Lead end-to-end initiatives with emphasis on predictable delivery and measurable outcomes
• Define long-term automation strategy including migrations, upgrades, and failure recovery patterns
• Embed security and compliance controls (encryption, auth, RBAC, network controls) into Yugabyte platform components
• Ensure availability, reliability, and security of owned systems
• Collaborate with product teams, SREs and DBAs to apply platform guardrails
• Escalation point for area with incident resolution and post-incident reviews
• Mentor and coach engineers, support onboarding, reduce single points of failure
• Participate in on-call rotations and senior escalation support
• Represent the team in cross-tribe/company engineering efforts and guilds
• Participate in interviewing and hiring to maintain high engineering bar

Key requirements

• Significant Platform Engineering experience with senior ownership of production platform systems at scale
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP)
• Strong Python development skills (or similar)
• Solid understanding of software engineering principles (secure, testable, maintainable code)
• Proficiency with Cloud APIs and DevOps tooling (Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD, Teleport)
• Clear communicator across teams and ability to articulate trade-offs and value
• Experience leading or contributing to incident response and post-incident improvement
