Senior Rail Traction Power / Substation Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead technical delivery for rail traction power and substation projects within AECOM’s Electrification & Power team. You’ll oversee design packages, perform independent checks, and mentor engineers while collaborating with project teams and clients. The role spans feasibility through construction support, with opportunities to work on UK and international projects. You’ll contribute to safe, compliant designs that meet codes and add value across the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight and delivery of design packages across project stages
• Support development of traction power and substation capability within the team
• Coordinate technical delivery with the project team and liaise with clients
• Produce concept and detailed design documentation, calculations, reports, specifications
• Perform independent technical checks for compliance with standards and requirements
• Review design outputs and offer technical guidance
• Conduct site visits and surveys to inform design development
• Provide construction-stage design support and attend site during construction when required
• Adhere to Health & Safety and CDM requirements

Key requirements

• Experience in traction power and high voltage substation design
• Experience delivering feasibility, outline, and detailed design stages
• CRE/Lead Engineer experience advantageous (or ability to progress with mentoring)
• Strong understanding of industry standards and design governance
• Low voltage experience desirable but not essential
• Collaborative with cross-functional teams
