Trainee Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer

Yolk Recruitment is supporting a leading manufacturing business in Pontypool with the recruitment of a Trainee Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer.

This is an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified, apprentice-trained engineer who is looking to build a long-term career in manufacturing maintenance. You will join a supportive and experienced Engineering team, receiving structured training, mentoring and hands-on development as you progress towards becoming a fully competent multiskilled maintenance engineer.

The successful candidate must have a strong electrical foundation. As a minimum, you will need to hold an NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent Level 3 electrical qualification. Candidates who have completed a dual-skilled or multiskilled apprenticeship with a recognised electrical qualification are also encouraged to apply.

Initially, the role will have a strong focus on planned preventative maintenance. You will shadow experienced engineers, develop your understanding of the site and its equipment, and gradually build your confidence across electrical fault-finding, reactive maintenance and mechanical maintenance activities.

This is a key development role and forms part of a wider group initiative, so the successful person will receive genuine investment, support and attention throughout their progression.

What you'll be doing

As a Trainee Multiskilled Maintenance Engineer, you will be part of the site Engineering team and report into the Engineering Management structure. You will:

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance activities on production machinery, electrical equipment and site services
  • Work alongside experienced multiskilled engineers to develop electrical and mechanical maintenance skills
  • Support reactive maintenance and breakdown response as your technical competence develops
  • Assist with electrical fault-finding, repairs and routine maintenance work in line with your training and authorisation
  • Develop your knowledge of mechanical systems, pneumatics, conveyors, motors, drives and production equipment
  • Help maintain the reliability of key site services, including electrical systems and compressed air
  • Complete maintenance documentation, service reports and CMMS updates accurately
  • Support continuous-improvement activity and contribute ideas to improve equipment reliability, performance and safety
  • Work closely with production teams, engineering colleagues and external contractors to ensure safe and efficient operation of the plant
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with Health & Safety, environmental legislation and company procedures

The experience you'll bring

This role would suit a practical, enthusiastic and ambitious engineer who has recently completed their apprenticeship or is looking for their first permanent maintenance engineering role.

Essential requirements:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering as a minimum, or an equivalent recognised Level 3 electrical engineering qualification
  • Completed electrical engineering apprenticeship, electrical maintenance apprenticeship or dual-skilled/multiskilled apprenticeship with a strong electrical bias
  • A genuine ambition to develop into a fully multiskilled maintenance engineer
  • Practical, hands-on electrical experience gained through an apprenticeship, placement or industrial engineering environment
  • A good understanding of electrical maintenance principles, electrical safety and safe isolation procedures
  • A willingness to develop mechanical maintenance skills through structured training, mentoring and shadowing
  • A positive, reliable and proactive approach to work
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of Health & Safety

What you'll get in return

  • Salary of circa £35,000
  • A structured training and development pathway into a multiskilled maintenance engineering position
  • Direct mentoring and shadowing from experienced site engineers
  • Company sponsorship towards an HNC or HND qualification, subject to successful completion of probation and business requirements
  • The opportunity to develop knowledge of mechanical systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyors, drives and production equipment
